A man drowned while swimming with his family, California officials said.

The 19-year-old, later identified as Edin Hernandez Reyes of Hesperia, was swimming in Deep Creek Spillway when he drowned for unknown reasons, according to a July 9 news release from the Victor Valley Sheriff’s Department.

Bystanders pulled Reyes to shore and tried performing CPR but he later died at the hospital, officials said.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 760-552-6800, deputies said.

Hesperia is about an 80-mile drive northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
