An accused thief sped away in a Los Angeles Police Department SUV with the officer still inside, California authorities reported.

An officer on a security detail around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19, was inside her police SUV when a man walked up and stole it, according to a series of Los Angeles Police Department posts on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The man sped off and at some point the officer was ejected from the SUV, suffering non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The accused thief crashed but took off again before the SUV came to a stop, police said. He tried to run away but was apprehended.

The officer was hospitalized in stable condition, police said. The identity of the man and his charges have not been released.
