5-week-old kitten nearly froze to death in MA. Soon Applesauce will need a new home
A person came across a freezing, 5-week-old kitten one early November morning in Massachusetts and stepped in to help warm him up, according to an animal rescue organization.
Now, the green-eyed black kitten named Applesauce, who’s just 7-weeks-old, will soon need a new home, the Animal Rescue League of Boston said in a Nov. 21 news release.
The person, who feeds and checks on a local cat colony in Berkley, recently found Applesauce “cold to the touch” in the area as temperatures were below freezing, according to the organization. Then, they alerted the ARL’s field services department and began caring for him inside.
Applesauce, who was “nearly frozen to death,” was given blankets and sugar water by the local resident before he was taken to the ARL’s animal care and adoption center for further help, the release said.
While a cat’s body temperature should typically range from 100.5-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, Applesauce had a temperature of 93 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the ARL.
With the help of veterinarians and a heated blanket, Applesauce’s temperature rose to 98 degrees Fahrenheit after a few hours, the release said.
“He was starting to perk up, indicated by a voracious appetite,” and was “otherwise in good health,” according to the group.
Applesauce is now in foster care, where he is “very vocal, attention-seeking, and purring for hours on end,” the rescue said.
He will be ready to join a family in a few weeks, as he’s too young to be adopted as of Nov. 21, according to the release.
“ARL is thrilled that after the quick actions of the finder, he will have the opportunity to find a family and live the life he deserves,” the rescue said.
Berkley is about 40 miles south of Boston.
