A man jumped into the water near a popular Arizona state park and never resurfaced, officials said.

The 30-year-old man jumped into water near Slide Rock State Park on Saturday, July 9, the Sedona Fire District said. He didn’t resurface.

“Due to the length of time underwater, this call was transitioned to a search and recovery versus a search and rescue,” Chief Dori Booth told McClatchy News in an email.

After an hour of searching, crews found the man’s body fully submerged. The body was brought to the surface and sent to a county medical examiner. The man’s name has not been released.

The area is known to be a popular cliff and rock jumping location. Officials did not say if he was cliff diving at the time.

“This has been an incredibly busy season for us so far for drownings, near drownings, and injuries in many of our popular areas for recreating along our creeks,” Booth said.

Slide Rock State Park is about 7 miles north of Sedona. Oak Creek flows through the park and has become a popular location for tourists.
