Hikers showed up at a Colorado police station with a bag full of human remains, officials said.

Two people walked into the Manitou Springs Police Department with parts of a human skull and other bones on May 29, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

The people told police they had been hiking near Spruce Trail in Manitou Springs, about 75 miles south of Denver. They stumbled upon a partial human skull and other bone fragments during their walk, police said.

The next day, detectives and two cadaver dog teams scoured the area for additional remains.

“On May 31, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the partial skull, surgical hardware associated with orthopedic repair, and other bone fragments,” deputies said in a June 14 news release. “The coroner’s office will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.”

Deputies are investigating the human remains and ask that anyone who may have information call the sheriff’s office tip line at 719-520-7777.
