What’s Walmart+? Here’s what to know about the membership program — and when it starts

Attention, Walmart shoppers! The retailer has some very good news.

Walmart announced Tuesday that its new membership program, Walmart+, will launch on September 15. It has been described as a competitor to Amazon Prime.

For $98 a year — or $12.95 a month — members will have access to free same-day delivery, discounts on gas and online tools to make shopping a breeze.

Membership will also include a free 15-day trial, the company said in a news release.

“We are a company committed to meeting our customers’ needs,” Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer, said. “Walmart+ will bring together a comprehensive set of benefits where we see the greatest needs from our customers and where our scale can bring solutions at an unprecedented value.”

Let’s break down the details:

Walmart+ members will be able to place unlimited free same-day delivery orders on more than 160,000 items ranging from tech to groceries at in-store prices, the company said.

Currently, Walmart offers same-day delivery for $10 on orders of $35 or more, Fast Company reported. While delivery will be free for Walmart+ members, the $35 minimum will carry over, according to the outlet.

At the nearly 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express gas stations, Walmart+ members will receive up to a 5 cent-per-gallon discount, according to the company. Sam’s Club gas stations are expected to be added soon.

Members will also have access to the Scan & Go feature in the Walmart app, which allows them to scan items while they shop in-store and then pay using Walmart Pay — completely touch-free.

Walmart+ benefits will be available on top of the retailers’ standard offerings such as free curbside pickup, and both next-day and two-day delivery, the company said.
