Granddaughter beats her grandma with cane at 97th birthday party, Indiana cops say

An Indiana woman is accused of beating her grandmother at her 97th birthday party, media outlets report.

Jalana Re’chea Taylor, 27, was in custody on suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury and other charges, according to jail records.

On Saturday, Taylor was celebrating her grandma’s birthday at the woman’s home in Muncie, a city northeast of Indianapolis, The Star Press reported. The police department had driven by the home for a “police parade” earlier in the day, according to the newspaper.

They returned to the home later in the evening.

According to police, Taylor’s grandma slapped her for making rude comments, WXIN reported. Then Taylor grabbed the grandmother’s walking cane and hit her in the head, causing the woman to “drift in and out of consciousness,” the TV station reported. The grandmother was hospitalized.

She is expected to recover from the injuries, WRTV reported.

People involved in the birthday celebration said the grandmother was celebrating her 99th birthday, The Star Press reported.

The police department told McClatchy News that its records indicate the grandmother is 97.

Taylor was in jail on $10,000 bond, records show.
