Warm and inviting. Patient and kind. Innovative, energetic and supportive. Loving and intelligent. Caring, passionate, and enthusiastic. Brave, attentive, calm and reassuring. Inspiring.

They’re just a few of the many outstanding qualities of Kansas City area educators highlighted by the students, families and colleagues they’ve touched with their work in classrooms and schools around the metro. The Star put out a call for people to nominate their favorite educators for our Honor Roll bracket, and the community responded.

Here’s a list of the 89 educators who’ve been nominated, along with descriptions of their outstanding attributes, lightly edited for clarity. They are published in the order in which The Star received the nominations.

Don’t forget to vote in our Honor Roll bracket for the educators who you think are top of the class.

Cheryl Anderson

Fifth grade teacher, Countryside Elementary School in Olathe

Cheryl is the embodiment of the teacher every child hopes to have. She is warm and inviting to her students each day. She is patient, kind, energetic, and innovative. My son had a really rough year last year and we went into the new year with hope but also some anxiety. He actually looks forward to being in Ms. Anderson’s class and his grades improved dramatically because he wants to be there and loves to learn from her. I volunteer at lunch sometimes and all her kids rave about how special she is. I’m forever grateful for her helping my son love school again.

Samantha Morgan Ayer Wolowicz

Speech and theater teacher, Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas

Since her first year teaching, Samantha Morgan has done everything possible to make her students’ lives better. She spent her own money to buy healthy snacks for her kids when they didn’t have anything to eat or needed some nutritional food to get them through the day. She came to the aid of students who were being bullied by classmates.

Several students came to her because she was the only person they felt safe with. Students would call her mom even long after they graduated. She advocated for the students who had lost all of their chances due to fighting and were facing expulsion. She supported them even after everyone else had given up on them. Samantha Morgan doesn’t have a selfish bone in her body. She will go to any lengths to help her students and her co-workers. My life and countless other lives have been made better by knowing her.”

Jennifer Harris

Principal, Martin City K-8 School in Kansas City

Dr. Harris has had a positive impact on our school community. She is loved and respected by students, parents, and staff. Her ability to communicate and authentically connect with people sets the tone that all in our community matter.

Renee Owens

First grade teacher, Morse Elementary School in Overland Park

Mrs. Owens came to school early every morning to let Lily comfortably into the building before the rush of kids. Another good example of Mrs. Owens being a difference maker is during the summer she came to our house to see how Lily was doing throughout her continued chemo treatments. She didn’t have to do this.

She was just being kind. Every single Friday she would stop by to give her something to look forward to while all the other kids were enjoying summer vacation trips and activities.

Mrs. Owens has made such a difference in Lily’s life. Lily has wanted to be a teacher her whole life. In Lily’s words: “I hope that one day I can be a teacher, be just like Mrs. Owens, and be able to help a student like Mrs. Owens has helped me.”

Steve Adams

Band teacher, Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park

My son will be a senior at this school and has signed up for band every year. My son is the kind of student who struggles with what he sees as the rigid structure of the day and does not like many teachers or classes. But band is different because of Steve Adams. We first witnessed Mr. Adams’ commitment during Covid. One can imagine the challenge of executing band curriculum over Zoom. His efforts to stay connected to his students during remote requirements were phenomenal. He is a respectful, fair, smart and efficient teacher who cares about his kids while demanding excellence.

Steve Adams clearly is a master in his field who lives up to the reputation of being a bona fide “South Legend.” He is a pinnacle role model for everyone in our high school community. Thank you for offering this opportunity to recognize an educator like him.

Martha Dean

P3-Kindergarten teacher, Border Star Montessori in Kansas City

Ms. Dean teaches kids ages 3-6 in ways that should make the community proud and make the children in her classroom feel proud of themselves. My son has excelled in her class, getting academically ready for kindergarten and learning about kindness, dignity and the great big world outside of the classroom. It’s awesome to see how Ms. Dean nurtures these young learners and gives them enough space to solve problems for themselves.

My son started at Border Star in the fall of 2021 as the world was “re-opening” from the pandemic. He found himself in a community that took good care of my then three-year-old as he ventured into his first preschool classroom and also mixing with strangers in ways that hadn’t happened for a long time. Ms. Dean made that transition smooth for families in her Gold Casa at Border Star, something I will appreciate for years to come.

Keith Jones

Principal, Platte County High School in Platte City

Dr. Jones is a true champion of local Kansas City students. Knowing him as long as I have, I know that he has had several opportunities to leave and lead secondary education outside the states of Kansas and Missouri. However, as an HBCU graduate (Florida A&M University) Dr. Jones continues to follow his heart - Keith’s heart is Kansas City. Our school system is stronger, more strategic and sustainable with a man of his caliber and capabilities. I am proud to nominate my friend, Dr. Keith Jones for this prestigious recognition.

Marijayne Manley

Business teacher, Warrensburg High School in Warrensburg, Missouri

Marijayne always places her students first! She strives to give our students real-world experiences in our Marketing and Retail classes. She stays after school for several nights during the year to keep our school store open so that students can learn the ins and outs of running a business. She has helped kick-start our new Tiger-Prints small business enterprise where students have the opportunity to create their own apparel. She is a teacher that works behind the scenes and does not get recognized for her hard work and dedication. As a first-year teacher, I have benefited greatly from her guidance and mentorship. Marijayne should be recognized for teaching the next generation career skills, for caring about each student that walks in her room, and for being a spectacular co-worker.

Tyler Unsell

English teacher and debate coach, Park Hill High School in Kansas City

Mr. Unsell taught me to form my own opinions and use my voice. He made the class think about difficult topics and learn how to discuss them civilly. All views were respected but they had to be upheld with facts. He fostered a healthy back and forth conversation that so much of society lacks. And he never lost sight of humor!! I learned a lot and laughed a lot, all while growing my confidence thanks to him.

Shalan Mill

English language development teacher, Fleetridge Elementary School in Raytown, Missouri

It is apparent that Shalan knows the value of relationships and their impact on her students. When she had a student who was struggling with her parents’ divorce, Shalan gave up her plan time most mornings to eat breakfast with this student, because she could relate.

When a distraught student was struggling to overcome the trauma experienced as a refugee detained in a detention center, Shalan made it a priority to make him feel comfortable and safe within our school. She devoted many of her plan periods to reading books with him, getting to know him, and using Google Maps to allow him to see and share with her the neighborhood where he grew up. Fast forward two years later and he is thriving and fluent in English.

These are just a couple of the countless examples of how Ms. Mill goes above and beyond for her students’ well being.

Shannon Floyd

Special education teacher, Sycamore Hills Elementary School in Independence, Missouri

Shannon is the most amazing special education teacher at Sycamore Hills Elementary in Independence. She has quite literally changed our world. Our middle daughter is dyslexic and we struggled for years getting her the help she desperately needed to succeed in school and in life. Our daughter has had some fabulous teachers over the years, but I believe Shannon deserves this honor as I know our family is not the only one that she has impacted in the very best way. She is also a mom and is involved in the PTA. To say that she is a special person to do what she does is an understatement. This would be an awesome way to let her know how much we, and so many others, love her!!

Cuquita Evans

Spanish and English language learners program teacher, Truman High School in Independence, Missouri

Cuquita has the perfect balance of grace and accountability. She builds relationships with all of her kiddos well beyond the superficial and, in return, expects them to give her their best effort when in her classroom. She also embraces the linguistic and cultural diversity in her classrooms with our large EL population.

She is always understanding and tries to connect with all of her students and she tries to always make the class laugh and make the learning fun and she always makes everything no stress

Miss Cuquita is a great teacher because she is fun and kind.

You always hear students speak very positively about her, and it’s clear to see she loves what she does just by how she holds herself day in and day out.

Charlotte Pierre

Fifth grade teacher, Sycamore Hills Elementary School in Independence, Missouri

Ms. Pierre is my child’s teacher and she truly works hard to know the children and work with them in the way that they respond to best. She has great communication with parents and other staff, plans fun activities and is detail oriented and kind. Thanks, Ms Pierre!

Sean Ryan

Second grade teacher, Claude Huyck Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

Mr. Ryan is an amazing teacher. My daughter has had him for two years, and she loves being in his class. He is helpful with the students in the class and makes sure each student gets what they need regardless of where they are academically or behaviorally.

Jay Pitts-Zevin

Ninth and 10th grade English teacher, Académie Lafayette in Kansas City

Jay Pitts-Zevin, or Mr. PZ, as his students call him, was in his first year teaching at ALIHS when my friends and I approached him with a request. We trusted the man as soon as we met him; he ensured that with actions such as calling every student’s parents for a heartwarming chat or engaging immediately in school activities. The year prior, I had started a school newspaper; the first in my small, budding school. I treated the paper like my baby, I was so passionate about it. Wanting the newspaper to be official, we were running out of options for a faculty sponsor, until Mr. PZ stepped in. He accepted the sudden new position with passion, and dove right into the project. I was overjoyed by the support for the paper I started, all because of Mr. PZ. He has gone above and beyond throughout the year, not just acting as sponsor, but actively enjoying and bettering the process of creating the newspaper, only because we asked him to.

Marilyn Hynes

10th and 11th grade history teacher, Académie Lafayette in Kansas City

Mme. Hynes has made learning history wonderful all throughout my 3 years of High School so far. She brings positive energy to the class and makes conversation with the students to understand them more. She also goes out of her way to help students with questions until they completely understand, and is very passionate about her work.

Nora Abied

French teacher, Académie Lafayette in Kansas City

This teacher has helped many students in many different types of ways. She makes it easier to understand, and she is very helpful and sweet and kind.

Brooke Thompson

First grade teacher, The Barstow School in Kansas City

Mrs. Thompson goes above and beyond for her students. She harnesses the true joy of learning and instills it in every student who crosses her path. She works harder than any teacher I’ve ever met. She makes lessons relevant, with Chiefs related Math activities, VIP student celebrations, and personalized lessons. With over 20 years of teaching under her belt, she comes to the classroom everyday with the enthusiasm of a first year teacher and the expertise of a well versed veteran. Mrs. Thompson treats everyone with love and respect, and in turn, that love and respect is given back to her by students, parents, and staff alike. Every child should be so lucky to have a “Mrs. T” in their life.

Sara Hamilton

Spanish teacher, F.L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kansas

Señora Hamilton is someone who sees the good in every student even after difficult situations. She continually goes out of her way to have intentional conversations with students so they do not fly under the radar. Due to her ability to create connections and communicate bilingually, populations that before felt excluded now have a voice in the building. Parents, students and other members of our educational staff feel that they have someone reliable to speak to and who will help them find the answers that they are looking for. In addition to her work in the classroom, Señora Hamilton founded the Latino Student Union here at Schlagle High School. This group is able to come together to make the Latinx/Hispanic community at our school more present and visible all while educating their peers. Señora Hamilton has made our school a more open and inclusive place.

David Cavender

Head custodian, F.L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kansas

Dave is the head custodian at our school, so sometimes that means he is moving from the time he gets to work in the morning until after the rest of the staff is long gone. With that being said, you would never know it — Dave always has a smile on his face and is willing to help. As a staff member, if you need something Dave will get it for you by the end of the day.

Not only does he work tirelessly to ensure our school is clean, he also goes above and beyond his title with students. He will take time to talk to students who are wandering the halls, students who might seem alone, or even just students who seem to be off. It is these intangibles that help students who might not connect with any other adults in the building which in turn makes them more likely to participate and graduate high school. School is not just the teachers and administration, without staff like Dave, our school would not be able to function and some students would not continue to come everyday to school.

Clarence Forshey III

Special education teacher, Gloria Willis Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas

Mr. Forshey comes to work everyday with a smile on his face and a unique personality for our students. He puts his best effort in daily to support students with learning disabilities as well as our general education students. Mr. Forshey helps mentor students through his coaching. Mr. Forshey is working daily to bridge learning gaps and help students become the best they can be! He is an amazing role model for our students and he deserves this honor. He spends many long nights coaching football, wrestling, and track! He has made a difference in MANY students’ lives!

Michelle Fields

Fifth grade teacher, Leawood Elementary School in Leawood

Mrs. Fields is the definition of what any parent or staff member would want to work with in education. The impact she has on her students and their families goes beyond the classroom setting.

I was lucky enough to work with Mrs. Fields for 5 years at Leawood Elementary. Both of my sons had her as their teacher, and she provided an experience that helped shape them to who they are today. My oldest is now a Freshman at Blue Valley North, and my youngest is a 6th grader at Leawood Middle School. Even though they are no longer at her school, we still connect about them all the time.

For my family personally, she was attentive to how different my boys were. Each was successful, and came home every day enjoying school. I have seen first hand how she is assigned some of the most challenging students, time and time again. And every year she shows up, supports, and loves them like no one else can.

Mrs. Fields is dedicated beyond measure, and comes from a family of educators. She was just recently married, and her wedding was one of pure joy and love. She is a great human all around.

Katelyn Faubion

Second grade teacher, Welborn Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

I thought it was remarkable what an awesome teacher this young lady is and how fortunate her students are to have her as their teacher due to her caring ways and her darling classroom, complete with a reading nook she has created out of an old iron claw foot bathtub. I’m sure it was so heavy to bring in! She has created such an awesome learning environment and I can tell how much her students adore her and look to please her and want to make sure she sees them doing well.

Jody Moeschler

Interim principal, Frances Willard Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

Since Mrs. Moeschler has transitioned into interim principal she has worked hard to store the community in our building by being supportive and restorative. Recently, she just met with a students family where the student was struggling to come to school, had suicidal ideation, and going through a hard time. With Mrs. Moeschlers dedication, she listened to the families concerns, connected with the student and family, and provided a supportive plan for the student and that would support the teachers too. Since meeting with the family, the student has attended school every day, always has a big smile on his face and started making more friends. This is one of the many stories I could tell about how supportive she has been in this role but also in our building.

Mary Krejci

1st grade teacher, Piper Prairie Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

My son unexpectedly lost his Grandpa in 1st grade, and Mrs. Krejci was an amazing support, not only to my son but to me as well. She always checked in on him, gave him extra hugs, and continually checked in to see how I was doing too. Now he’s in 2nd grade, and Mrs. Krejci isn’t his teacher, but she STILL finds him for hugs, and on especially difficult days, like his Grandpa’s birthday and others. She checks in when she notices he’s absent, comes to his sporting events, and has truly treated us like family. Mrs. Krejci made an extremely difficult time for our family so much better by always being there for my son and she continues to do that to this day!

Tony Scardino

Social studies teacher and former baseball coach, Blue Valley High School in Stilwell, Kansas

In high school, I struggled with my mental health; but going to Mr. Scardino’s class every day for 3 years was part of the day I looked forward to. He lights up any room he walks in and cares about everyone whether they’re his student and his fellow staff. He always takes time to get to know someone and their life outside of school and gives the best advice. High school flew by, I wish I could do it all over again just to be in his class one more time. Thank you, Mr. Scardino, for helping me become the strong young woman I am today and inspiring me to go into secondary education; I don’t have enough words or emotions to explain the impact you’ve had on me, my family, BV, and the entire community.

Jodi Reno

Eighth grade science teacher, Central Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas

She encouraged me everyday to do better in school even though I had a language barrier. I did not speak English very well and she always pushed me to do better. Now I’m a medical aide at Goshen Health Care. I thank God for her life and she deserves this recognition for her love for others, especially all the young students that she has encouraged to believe in themselves.

Christy Martin

Preschool teacher, Piper Early Childhood Center in Kansas City, Kansas

She was such a strong but gentle force in my son’s first year in elementary. She took a very rough start to the year and turned it into an amazing first year of school for my kiddo. She wasn’t this teacher for just my son, this is her. Kind, brave, intelligent, calm, clear and fun.

Keelin Althoff

Speech therapist, Piper USD 203 in Kansas City, Kansas

Keelin is a speech therapist who is skilled and knowledgeable, but beyond speech; she is also an advocate for all of the kids who she works with. Her dedication to improving all aspects of the lives of the children, their families, and the entire district is very evident and she uses her expertise and calm, caring manner to ensure the children have an advocate, an educator and a cheerleader.

She has served as a mentor, a sounding board and a safe place for our son when his speech, or various teenage experiences has been overwhelming. She has been able to help him speak words he was afraid to use because of his impediment, and she has helped him use his life experiences to mentor younger children, in turn improving his self confidence. She works with teachers, coaches, administration and our family to ensure our son recognizes his strengths, potential, and helps guide him toward the best path to success in his speech, his education, his athletics and his life.”

Melanie Sweney

Kindergarten teacher, Chinn Elementary School in Kansas City

Mrs. Sweney sends a daily email to update parents on how the day in kindergarten went. The email ALWAYS begins by raving about the students working hard. When speaking with her in person, Mrs. Sweney is quick to answer questions, provide reassurance, and be the dream teacher for the parent of a kindergartner. I know my son is in good hands with her and that piece of mind is so valuable.

Steve King

Fifth grade teacher, Piper Creek Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

Mr. King is so innovative he always has fun ways to teach his students. The kids enjoy going to school everyday because he make learning fun. He also keeps parents updated and involved in everything that is going on my his students to make sure they are all succeeding in every subject.

Amy Thacker

Elementary instructional coach, Welborn Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

Amy Thacker is a role model at Welborn Elementary. I see her working daily with teachers to strengthen their classroom teaching. I sub at the building and she inspires others to be great. Her knowledge of how students learn to read is very strong, and rather than telling teachers what to do she shows you. Everyone at the building is better because of the work that she does.

Teachers love her, but students look forward to learning with Ms. Thacker. My daughter did not want to do small group at first, but then as she started to work with Ms. Thacker her confidence began to grow. She started feeling good about herself and all of this had a snowball effect. Her skills grew and grew.

Ms. Thacker always takes time to speak to all children and really listen to them. In this way she models respect and kindness, she models how important it is to build relationships with students and to help be that one caring adult in a child’s life. Ms. Thacker is stellar, and there isn’t anyone else who is more deserving of an award!

Amanda McCommon

Kindergarten teacher, Grant Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

She has endured so much in her first few years of teaching. It’s unimaginable the things she goes through on a daily basis. Despite fighting fibromyalgia and frequent migraines, she shows up and fights for her kids and teacher mates. It takes a strong person to endure such a role, and she excels at it day in and day out.

Whitney Matthews

Government and American history teacher, Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas

She’s been extremely kind and understanding throughout all of my issues. When I was out of school for mental issues, she accommodated me. She shows that she cares, she makes the class engaging, and is sure to challenge her students. She’s always welcoming and tries her best to build strong relationships with her students. Mrs. Matthews is open about her own life and struggles which allow for relatability and a sense of comfort in the classroom. She makes sure everyone’s needs are met and that she makes a great learning environment; you can tell she has a strong passion for her job.

Rebecca Falge

Fifth grade teacher, Grant Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

Ms. Falge has a true passion for working with kids. She not only teaches the required curriculum but she shows our kids love, compassion, and kindness. She goes above and beyond for the Grant community by helping out wherever she can, like with the after school program Connecting the Dots. Grant is lucky to have such an amazing person working in their halls. We love Ms. Falge.

Katie Mallory

Kindergarten teacher, Bridle Ridge Elementary School in Raymore, Missouri

When my daughter had her life turned around by a bus accident, Mrs. Mallory went above and beyond her duties to make sure my daughter did not get behind in class. She volunteered her personal time after class everyday to come to our house and continue her education. My child has formed a bond with her for the things she did not have to do. Mrs. Mallory is the ideal teacher who cares about her students and wants the best for them.

Jesse Graber

Art teacher and family advocacy teacher, Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas

Mr. Graber is an art teacher at my highschool. He is my Family Advocacy teacher, and when he’s able to, always puts in the effort to help me with school work in classes where I don’t really understand. He helps me understand how to fill out job applications and teaches me what to look out for when looking for a job. Mr. Graber is always there for his students if they feel unwell and need to go to the nurse or if someone just needs to talk and doesn’t feel comfortable going to the counselor. I’ve been at Washington for two years now and I can already see that Mr. Graber is one of the best teachers there, the staff is lucky to have him on their team and the students are lucky to look at him as a role model.

Keri Holt

Library Media Specialist, Walden Middle School in Kansas City

Kelly makes student-focus her priority. She is always making kids laugh and smile in the hallways. Kelly turns moments of downtime into opportunities to connect with each and every student on her team. It is not strange to see students from previous years come back to visit her, reconnect, and to get a hug from Kelly. She inspires and motivates students through the relationships she has built and nourished. In Kelly’s 2 years with Walden, she hosted a Baking Intramural and took on the production of the school musical. Both experiences were time-consuming but worth the amount of engagement she was able to have with students. Using extracurricular activities and interests, Kelly is able to make those deeper connections with students and keep to her values of always staying student-focused.

Mary Laughlin

Seventh grade communication arts teacher, Walden Middle School in Kansas City

Dr. Laughlin puts a lot of effort into building relationships with her students/classes. Also, she is actively working to promote equity among students regarding discipline. Mrs. Fudge is an outstanding educator. It is apparent in her work ethic and the great lengths to which she goes to see her students succeed. Not only is she there to assist them in class, but she provides extra resources for them and puts programs in place for students who don’t particularly fall under her job description. Her willingness to know her students personally and to create an environment of inclusion has helped her students become integrated and accepted within our team. Mrs. Fudge takes time to communicate her student needs and cultures in a way that also helps them bring their identity to the group. I believe that to a large degree the success of our English language learning students is directly related to the efforts that Mrs. Fudge goes on a daily basis. She maintains a positive attitude, is a mentor, and goes above and beyond.

I would like to nominate Ms. Dawn for the Star’s Honor Roll because in my 4 years of being a student at Schlagle she has made the biggest impact in my life. She’s taught life lessons, we’ve had heart to heart talks, she’s just the perfect mother role in the school. I know I can come to her about anything and she will be more than happy to help me out, or just give me a couple words of encouragement. I thank Ms. Dawn for helping me get through my years at Schlagle and not making it so stressful, she literally the highlight of my high school experience.

Baleigh Shearer

Second grade teacher, Lindbergh Elementary School in Kansas City, Kansas

My son was diagnosed with ADHD this school year. To start the year off, he struggled greatly with emotional regulation, some outbursts caused the class to leave the room. She has worked with our family and the school to find a plan to encourage him as he learned to improve these skills. She has never made him feel like there is something wrong with him, or that she was upset about his behaviors, movements and outbursts. She has celebrated his progress and motivated him in his scholastic strengths. Teaching is about passing on knowledge, but she has nourished both his mind and his emotional self. He has gained so much ground this year both academically and with his regulation skills and she has been a large part of his success.

Pamela K. Gray-Sublett

Instructional aide, Central Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas

Pamela has built very many relationships with students and families over the last 20+ years. As her daughter, I have witnessed the joy and excitement that students get when recognizing her and wanting to catch up on their journeys. When connecting with these students, they can always remember her saying something that stuck with them and assisted them with making better choices, remaining academic scholars, staying focused, and accountability. I’ve had a front row seat and I’m thankful that she’s given her time to this district, because to her, our students will always come first.

Dana Nelson is the Kansas City, Kansas, advocate for all special education students. She looks out for the best interest of all students. She is the most impactful and influential director that I’ve known. She works non stop for the students through advocacy and meeting with Governor Kelly. I’ve received messages from her at 2 a.m. because of her passion for the students. Additionally, she leads a highly effective team of instructional coaches for special education and makes sure she builds capacity in her team. She is also influential in the growth of our special education teachers and students. Her influence on students is vast in the district and the Wyandotte Comprehensive Special Education Cooperative. It goes without saying that Dana Nelson is the unsung hero. It is rare that an educator in special education gets the recognition for all the years and work they have put in to get students to graduation.

Mrs. Herbert not only juggles being a mom of three very active sons as well as a husband who is also a teacher and a high school basketball coach, but she sets the bar high for being a teacher. She treats the children with respect and allows them to be individuals but shows them how to grow as a person and as a student. Jena LaValle

Jena is the true embodiment of an engaged educator and student advocate. Her passion is visible in the work she does and how she speaks to and about her students. All of my interactions with her are pleasant and I truly feel that she is a gift to her students and the education system as a whole. She is bright in many facets, approachable, and kind. These are all the characteristics that I would enjoy in an educator and I am so blessed that my daughter gets to experience an impressionable teacher like Jena. She is encouraging to her students and ensures they are supported in their daily interactions, educationally and on a personal level. Mr. Rudolph is an incredible role model to myself and many of my classmates who participated in his classes. His passion for not only music, but for molding students into people who stand up for what they’re passionate about, is admirable. During my time at BSHS, I heard students regard him as a coach, friend, mentor, and father figure. Nearly six years after graduating, Mr. Rudolph and I remain in touch. He currently teaches my brother, a junior at BSHS, who also regards Ruddy as a cheerleader in his academic and personal lives. Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to build myself up enough to survive the horrors of high school. I’m forever grateful for his commitment to teaching and community.

Her charm and composure under pressure earned her the 2023 Teacher of the Year award at East High School and finalist for Teacher of the Year for the district.
