Quadruple shooting called 'a devastating scene' by police spokeswoman
Kansas City police investigated a shooting Thursday evening that left one man dead and three injured, including a child.
The shooting was reported shortly after 8 p.m. in the parking lot of a restaurant near Gregory Boulevard and Prospect Avenue, police said.
A man was pronounced dead at the scene. A child, described by police as being younger than 5 years old, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. A man and a woman were taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Police were still trying to learn exactly how the shooting unfolded, said Sgt. Kari Thompson, a Kansas City police spokewoman.
Thompson said investigators believed an altercation occurred between two groups of people. Two of the adults shot in the incident were together but their relationship was unclear, Thompson said.
A second child at the scene had witnessed the incident but wasn’t shot.
The incident occurred just five days after two young boys were shot and killed at a home on College Avenue on Saturday.
“We’re all devastated, we’re all speechless,” Thompson said. “This is a devastating scene, not only for the people who live in this area, but also the police and detectives who had to respond to this scene.”
Investigators were not searching for suspects, Thompson said. The investigation continued.
