A 19-year-old Kansas City man has been charged in connection with a chase and shooting Monday night near Smithville Lake.

Miguel A. Guerrero, who was arrested Monday after the truck he was driving wrecked during a police pursuit, has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a traffic stop, according to Clay County prosecutors.

A Clay County sheriff’s deputy reported he was shot at during the incident, which began with reports of gunfire near the west side of the lake.

According to court documents, deputies tried to stop a 2007 Toyota Tacoma leaving the lake at high speed. A deputy who stopped on U.S. 169 to deploy a tire deflation device heard gunshots coming from the Toyota and found a bullet hole in his vehicle.

Another bullet apparently hit a truck driven by a woman with three children inside. No injuries were reported.

The Toyota wrecked near Interstate 435 and Missouri 152. Guerrero and a passenger were taken into custody, and a third person fled. Deputies searched the truck and retrieved a handgun and a small bag apparently containing methamphetamine.

According to court documents, Guerrero told deputies he had fled the lake area after he heard shots fired following a fistfight involving some friends.

Guerrero told deputies that another person who was in the truck, who was not caught by police, was responsible for the shooting. In his statement, Guerrero said he did not know that person’s name.

A white SUV that also fled the area at high speed was not found.
