Two people were taken into custody Monday night in Clay County after a chase that began with shots being fired at Smithville Lake.

Clay County authorities responded about 7 p.m. to several 911 reports of shots heard near the west side of the lake.

A sheriff’s deputy and county park ranger pursued a pickup truck leaving the park. At one point the deputy was fired upon while in pursuit but was not struck, said sheriff’s spokesman Jon Bazzano.

Nobody in the park was injured, he said.

The pickup sped south on U.S. 169 and eventually wrecked near Interstate 435 and Missouri 152.

The two suspects were not immediately identified. Bazzano said a third person in another vehicle was still being sought.
