Woman shot April 17 in central Kansas City neighborhood dies

A 19-year-old woman shot early April 17 outside a large house party in central Kansas City has died, police said Thursday.

Tyra T. Brown of Overland Park and her boyfriend were in a car adjacent to George Washington Carver Dual Language Elementary in the 4500 block of Elmwood Avenue.

The two were discussing whether they were going into a party at a nearby residence when someone started shooting, police said.

The boyfriend later told police he saw Brown slumped over the wheel. He got out of the car and ran. When he returned, he saw three of Brown’s friends had driven her to the hospital.

Brown died Tuesday.

She is the city’s 30th homicide in 2016.

A teacher at Olathe East High School has launched a GoFundMe site to raise money for funeral expenses. Brown graduated from Olathe East in 2015.

“She was shy, astute, thoughtful, determined, gracious and unbelievably talented,” Gretl Swyers wrote in a fundraising post. “Tyra Brown had the voice of an angel but the heart of a humble servant of God.

“Everyone who was fortunate enough to know her loved her and knew her to be a kind, caring, loving and compassionate person. Tyra loved people, and people loved Tyra.”

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-8477.
