Prosecutors on Friday accused a 40-year-old Kansas City man of leading police on a high-speed noontime Thursday chase on downtown streets.

Aaron Newman was driving a car that had been reported stolen, according to court documents.

Newman was free on bond in another criminal case involving a stolen car and fleeing from police, according to court records.

On Friday, Jackson County prosecutors charged him in the Thursday incident with resisting arrest by fleeing and creating a risk of serious injuries or death. His bond was set at $10,000.

The chase began just after noon Thursday when police received a report of a woman being forced into a car in the area of Independence and Prospect avenues.

When officers spotted the car, the driver sped away. He reportedly ran numerous red lights and stop signs.

Police chased the car as it reached speeds of 100 mph and went into Kansas City, Kan., and back into Kansas City.

At one point, the car crashed through construction barricades near 14th Street and Woodland Avenue, forcing workers to run out of the way.

The car made several circuits on side streets downtown and in the Crossroads Arts District before it hit a tire deflation device police placed on Truman Road.

The pursuit ended a few minutes later near a fire station on West Pennway underneath Interstate 35.

Police learned later that the car had not been stolen. According to the owner, the car had been rented to Newman in exchange for cocaine.
