Police identify man fatally shot outside Olathe bar
Police have identified the man fatally shot outside an Olathe bar late Wednesday as William R. Schutkestling, 38, of Olathe.
A 28-year-old Augusta, Kan., man suspected in the fatal shooting was arrested. The man is in the Johnson County jail awaiting formal charges.
Police responded to reports of shots being fired about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Double Nickel Bar & Grill at 189 S. Rogers Road, which is just east of Interstate 35 at Santa Fe Street.
Officers found Schutkestling, who had been shot. He died at the scene.
“We are horribly saddened by the senseless loss of life,” the restaurant posted on its Facebook page.
The restaurant said that Schutkestling was a good friend to the staff and customers and that he was trying to provide help in a situation when he was killed.
“We are a family-oriented restaurant,” the post said. “This kind of thing just doesn’t happen here. We will be closed until further notice. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and our staff.”
Police said an officer with a police dog found the suspect near the area and took him into custody for questioning.
Authorities urge anyone with information to call the Olathe Police Department at 913-971-6950 or the Tips Hotline at 816-474-8477.
Schutkestling’s death is the 38th homicide in the Kansas City area this year.
