Man accused in threat to Kansas City Chiefs’ Mahomes, Kelce enters diversion
An Illinois man who allegedly threatened to shoot Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce at a 2024 concert at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has entered a diversion program, court documents show.
If 25-year-old Aaron P. Brown of Winchester, Illinois, successfully completes the program, the cause will be dismissed, court records show.
The 12-month diversion agreement requires Brown to provide education to local schools and athletic teams in his area about digital responsibility, legal consequences of posting threatening content on social media, and the impact of impulsive decision-making, said Jazzlyn Johnson, director of communications for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Brown will be required to complete at least two educational activities or presentations per month and submit documentation of those activities, Johnson said.
If the plan is violated, the prosecution on the original charge could resume.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged Brown on Aug. 3, 2024, the day after the concert, with one felony count of making a second-degree terrorist threat. A grand jury indicted him on the same charge in December 2024.
Brown and his attorney sought to have the case dismissed, arguing that he didn’t make any “real threats” and that the charge violated his rights to free speech and due process. They described the social media post as “satirical” and tied it to sports rivalry trash talk.
Prosecutors argued that the post was reckless and serious enough to warrant a felony trial. In March, Jackson County Circuit Judge Jerri J. Zhang denied the defense motion to dismiss.
According to court documents, the alleged threat was made before the Morgan Wallen concert at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Aug. 2, 2024.
Brown allegedly posted to an account called “Gooey Bag” that read: “Mr. Wallen at Arrowhead with the wife. If he brings out Mahomes or Kelce I’ll take the (expletive) shot. (Expletive) em. Also (expletive) you (expletive) @taylorswift13.”
Mahomes, Kelce and Chris Jones were in attendance and escorted Wallen through the stadium’s corridors before the concert, according to court documents.
Authorities flagged the post as a threat and later identified the account as belonging to Brown. The concert was delayed about 40 minutes as officers searched for him.
