Shots fired during domestic disturbance at KC home; woman killed, man in custody
A domestic dispute ended in gunfire Thursday evening in Kansas City’s Independence Plaza neighborhood, leaving a woman dead and a man in custody, a police spokesperson said.
Officers responded about 6:15 p.m. to a domestic violence disturbance at home in the 2800 block of East Sixth Street, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.
After arriving, a group of people directed officers to the home, saying a woman was being assaulted. Officers could hear a disturbance inside, followed by multiple gunshots, Gonzalez said.
Officers entered the home and found the woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital. She was pronounced dead around 7:50 p.m., Gonzalez said. The victim was identified as 45-year-old Antwala Kelly.
Police found a man inside the home and took him into custody. Detectives were not looking for anyone else in the homicide at this time, Gonzalez said.
A preliminary investigation found that the woman and man were involved in an argument before it escalated into a physical disturbance, Gonzalez said. The relationship between the man and woman was not immediately known.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the home and collected evidence and statements from witnesses.
The killing is Kansas City’s 69th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares with 84 by this time last year.
