A man was arrested after he allegedly shot at a Kansas City police officer who was stopped at a stop sign Thursday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident after a suspect and the officer exchanged gunfire, according to a news release.

Around 1:40 p.m., a motorcycle unit officer with the Kansas City Police Department reported over his radio to dispatchers that he was taking gunfire near the intersection of 27th Street and Jackson Avenue.

The highway patrol said witnesses saw a man armed with a rifle fire multiple shots at the officer while they were stopped at a stop sign.

The officer got off his motorcycle and returned fire at the suspect. Responding officers then saw the suspect flee into a nearby wooded area, the highway patrol said.

Officers established a perimeter around the wooded area before the suspect eventually came out, unarmed. He was taken into custody.

Both the officer and suspect were not injured in the shooting, the highway patrol said.

K9 units were searching the area Thursday afternoon for the suspect’s weapon.

The highway patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the officer’s role in the shooting at the request of KCPD. It’s common for police agencies request help from an outside agency when a shooting involves an officer.

After the highway patrol investigation is complete, its findings will be forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

KCPD is investigating the suspect’s involvement in the shooting.
