The Cass County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office said a man died after he exchanged fire with a deputy in Archie Wednesday morning.

Deputies responded around 8:11 a.m. to calls about a disturbance in the 32000 block of Dorsett Hill Lane in a rural area of Archie, according to a news release.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man armed with a gun in the driveway of a residence. The man and a deputy exchanged gunfire, and the man was hit by a bullet, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies administered life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

Few details have been released about what led to the exchange of gunfire. The Western Missouri Sheriff’s Critical Incident Investigation Team is investigating the shooting.

The critical incident team is made up of independent officers from multiple agencies deployed to conduct objective investigations into officer-involved shootings.

The investigation is ongoing.

Archie is about a 52-minute drive southeast of Kansas City.
