One person dead, another in custody after early-morning Kansas City shooting
A man died after being shot inside a car during the early hours of Sunday morning, police say.
Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, Kansas City police were called to the 11500 block of Belmont Avenue, in south Kansas City’s Hickman Mills area, according to a news release from Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department. The block is directly south of Longview Road and between Blue Ridge Boulevard and Interstate 49.
Officers found the victim unresponsive inside a car in front of a house, according to the release. The man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was declared deceased shortly after arriving.
According to preliminary findings, the victim and one or more people were arguing inside a house. The victim went into a car in front of the house, where he was shot, the report states.
The Kansas City Police Department detained one man for further questioning. They are not currently looking for other people of interest, according to the release.
Police have not released the name of the victim.
The death is Kansas City’s 68th homicide of 2026, according to data tracked by The Star, which also includes fatal police shootings. At this point last year, Kansas City had recorded 78 homicides.
