A man was found shot to death in a residential area of Kansas City’s Blue Hills neighborhood Monday night, police said.

Officers were on patrol near 55th Street and Prospect Avenue around 11 p.m. when they heard the sound of gunshots to the south. Around that time, 911 callers also reported the sound of gunshots to the south, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.

As officers were investigating, another 911 call was updated to a shooting in the 5800 block of Wabash Avenue. When officers arrived to that location, they found a man with gunshot wounds lying unresponsive in the street, Becchina said.

Paramedics responded and rendered aid to the man before pronouncing him dead at the scene.

Police later identified the man who died as Mark Burns, 60.

Homicide unit detectives and crime scene personnel were on scene to begin an investigation. They were looking for physical evidence and searching for witnesses Tuesday.

Police say investigators learned the man who was killed was in front of a residence with a group of people when they heard the sound of gunshots. The group then realized the man was struck by the gunfire.

As of Tuesday, there were no suspect leads and no one was in custody, Becchina said.

The killing is the 62nd homicide of 2026, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 75 homicides.

Anyone with information is urged to contact homicide unit detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
