A Kansas City man has been charged with murder after an argument led to a fatal shooting at a Kansas City gas station Wednesday, court records show.

Timothy McClenton was charged Friday with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action in Jackson County Circuit Court.

Charges stem from an incident inside the Xpress Mart gas station at 4341 Paseo Blvd, where two people exchanged gunfire.

Officers responded to the gas station around 4:15 p.m., where they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet publicly identified the man who died.

Surveillance footage shows shooting

McClenton left the gas station after the shooting and called 911 from outside the Kansas City Police Department’s Central Patrol Division, according to court documents.

Police took McClenton and another man, Ed Gilliam, into custody. A 9mm handgun was found outside their vehicle at the police station.

At the shooting scene, investigators found two 9mm live rounds, three .40 caliber spent shell casings, and one 9mm spent shell casing.

Detectives spoke to a witness who said they saw the argument between McClenton and another man at the counter.

Surveillance footage shows McClenton stood between the man and the door, not letting him leave and pulling out a gun, according to court records.

The man also pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the ground. McClenton raised his gun and pointed it at the man, then the man raised his gun before they both fired shots, police said.

Court records say Gilliam is also seen in the surveillance footage pointing a gun at the man who died, but did not appear to shoot.

Prosecutors also charged Gilliam, who is a convicted felon, with unlawful possession of a firearm.

A Jackson County judge set McClenton’s bond at $150,000. Gilliam’s bond is $10,000. As of Saturday, hearings have not yet been scheduled in their cases.
