Jackson County prosecutors have charged a Kansas City man who police said kicked off a shootout at an Independence gas station in February.

William A. Chaney, who was charged with four felonies related to the incident, was a juvenile at the time of the shooting and turned 18 Wednesday, according to court records. Chaney and another person were injured in the shooting.

Chaney was certified as an adult in Jackson County Family Court last week was charged with one count of first-degree assault, two counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon in Jackson County Circuit Court on Thursday.

Chaney’s bond was set at $150,000.

Independence police stopped a Ford EcoSport SUV driving on U.S. 40 around 3:30 a.m. Feb. 22 after an officer saw one of the vehicle’s doors swing open, according to court documents.

The SUV’s driver told police the vehicle had been shot at, at a Sinclair gas station on Blue Ridge Boulevard, and Chaney, an occupant of the vehicle, told police he had been shot, police said.

Chaney was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center, where he was treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

About the same time, other police officers pursued a Mercedes Benz 300 into Kansas City as it traveled to Children’s Mercy Hospital. The car had multiple bullet holes, and a passenger had suffered several gunshot wounds, police said. That passenger was taken into the hospital for treatment.

Surveillance video from the gas station showed the shooting, police said.

The Mercedes could be seen pulling up next to the EcoSport, which was occupied by five people, including Chaney, according to court documents.

Chaney was seen brandishing a handgun with an extended drum magazine from the SUV and firing several times at the Mercedes, police said. Someone from the Mercedes fired back toward the EcoSport several times before the car fled drove off.
