Man charged in stabbing at Olathe park ruled not competent, ordered to hospital
A Johnson County judge found a man accused of stabbing an Olathe middle school teacher at a park earlier this year was not competent to stand trial, according to court records.
Kwan Trezvant, who was charged with attempted first-degree murder, was ordered to have a mental evaluation at the Johnson County Mental Health Center shortly after the March 19 stabbing.
During a hearing in Johnson County District Court on Thursday, a judge adopted the findings of an evaluation, found the man to be not competent and ordered him to be taken to Osawatomie State Hospital or Larned State Hospital for treatment. For now, the case against Trezvant will remain on hold, but may resume.
Competency is a legal distinction that describes a person’s ability to understand the proceedings and assist in their own defense.
Trezvant was accused of stabbing Jamie Trumpp, a music teacher at Indian Trail Middle School, in the neck at Two Trails Park in Olathe. A witness described the attack as a random act of violence.
According to a police affidavit, several people told officers they saw a man acting strangely, agitated and aggressive in the park before the stabbing. Officers found Trumpp with a neck wound; she was taken to a hospital where she received stitches for a long cut.
Police found Trezvant near the park. After he was brought to an interview room, officers allegedly observed him appearing to talk to people who were not in the room.
