Vandalism leads to postponed graduation at Kansas City, Kansas, high school

The leaders of Bishop Ward High School postponed graduation ceremonies that were scheduled for this week after vandalism on the school’s campus, according to a statement posted Saturday on the school’s website.

The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department is investigating the crime, which occurred on Thursday evening.

“After consultation with law enforcement, the Bishop Ward Board of Trustees, and the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, school leadership made the difficult decision to postpone commencement exercises until the investigation has concluded,” school leaders said in a joint statement.

“We recognize the disappointment this causes for students and families, but we believe it is important to allow the process to move forward thoroughly and fairly,” according to the statement.

Baccalaureate mass and graduation ceremonies were scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, according to the school’s calendar.

Because of the ongoing investigation, school leaders and the Catholic Schools Office said they were unable to provide additional details, including information related to students or potential disciplinary action.

Details of the investigation were not readily available Monday morning, Nancy Chartrand, a spokesperson with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department, said Monday morning.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
