Man killed in shooting outside Independence venue after event ends

A man died in a shooting early Sunday outside an Independence event venue, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded around 12:45 a.m. to the shooting at the Lux Premiere Event Space at the Scottsdale Center in the 17000 block of East US 40, said Detective Jack Taylor of the Independence Police Department.

There, officers found a man in his late 20s suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot outside the business, Taylor said.

Officers and medical crews provided life-saving measures, but the victim died at the scene.

A preliminary investigation found that the shooting occurred shortly after an event at the venue had ended, Taylor said.

The investigation is in its early stages, and detectives are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting and identify a potential suspect, Taylor said.

The killing is the city’s second homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to four homicides by this time last year.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
