One man died in a shooting in Kansas City’s Columbus Park neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.

Officers responded around 6:51 a.m. to East 4th Street and Holmes Road on a reported shooting. There, they found a man lying unresponsive in the road with gunshot wounds, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.

The officers provided medical aid to the man until paramedics responded and transported the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man had an interaction with one or more suspects in the street near where he was found. The interaction escalated to gunfire that struck the man, Becchina said.

Detectives are on scene investigating the incident as a homicide. They are looking for witnesses and processing the scene for evidence.

As of Saturday morning, there was no suspect information available.

“There are many apartment residences here close by, so detectives are optimistic that someone heard or saw something,” Becchina said in a statement.

The killing is Kansas City’s 43rd homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 55 homicides.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call homicide unit detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
