A California man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Johnson County court in connection to a 2024 car crash in Lenexa that left a 71-year-old woman dead.

Vincente Perez, of Barstow, California, pleaded guilty in Johnson County court on Monday to reckless second-degree murder, driving under the influence causing bodily harm, transporting an open container and driving while suspended, according to a news release from the county’s district attorney, Steve Howe.

Perez was driving a Subaru WRX near the 15200 block of College Boulevard in Lenexa around 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 7, 2024, when he rear-ended a Nissan Altima, causing both cars to leave the road.

Both Perez and the driver of the Altima were hospitalized as a result of the incident. A passenger in the Altima, 71-year-old Susan Cameron, of Lenexa, died at the scene.

Perez is set to appear for a sentencing hearing in Johnson County court on June 30, Howe said.
