Police fatally shoot man after he allegedly fired at officers in KC’s Northeast
Officers fatally shot a man after he allegedly fired at them during a domestic disturbance call Sunday evening in Kansas City’s Northeast, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Kansas City officers responded about 7:50 p.m. to a domestic disturbance involving a weapon at a home in the 5700 block of St. John Avenue, according to a preliminary investigation by the highway patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.
A 911 caller said there was a person armed with a weapon inside a vehicle in front of a home, according to the highway patrol.
Two officers arrived about 7:56 p.m. and contacted the person, who ran from the vehicle to the front porch of the home. The man then allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at officers, the highway patrol said.
The officers returned fire, striking him. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The highway patrol said a handgun was recovered at the scene.
The highway patrol is investigating the shooting and will be presenting its findings to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review. The investigation is ongoing, and the information is preliminary, the patrol said
The Kansas City Police Department is investigating the original domestic disturbance.
The killing is the city’s 39th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 51 homicides reported by this time last year.
