Many rounds fired in rolling shooting through JoCo neighborhoods, police say

A rolling shooting that began on an Overland Park residential street and ended in a fiery crash in a Prairie Village park over the weekend unfolded after the victims said they were followed from Kansas City, police said.

Overland Park and Prairie Village police are jointly investigating the shooting that occurred around 6:50 p.m. Sunday in the 9900 block of Roe Avenue and ended about 1.5 miles north at Franklin Park in the 8700 block of Roe Avenue.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests have been made, said Officer John Lacy, a spokesman with the Overland Park Police Department.

Prior to the shooting, a driver picked up a female passenger in Kansas City and shortly after, the driver noticed they were being followed by a red or maroon 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Kansas license plate 9103ACY, Lacy said.

To evade the Jeep, the driver turned onto Roe. The pursuing Jeep caught up, and someone inside fired a gun multiple times at the victims’ vehicle, Lacy said. The victims’ vehicle crashed near Franklin Park.

When officers arrived, they found two females. The passenger sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital. The driver also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Initial evidence indicates that the shooters fired a large number of rounds, concentrated in the areas of 99th and Roe, 91st and Roe and at Franklin Park, Lacy said.

Police are asking people who live in the area to check their property and notify the Overland Park Police Department if they find any evidence, such as surveillance video, shell casings, or damaged property.

Detectives continue to search for the Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). They can also call the Overland Park Police Department at 913-344-8750 or the Prairie Village Police Department at 913-642-6868.
