Before fatal shooting, man allegedly said he felt ‘emasculated’ by victim
A man accused of fatally shooting a woman in south Kansas City Sunday allegedly told investigators he was attempting to shoot “in the air” to scare the woman after the pair got into an argument, during which he “felt emasculated” by her.
Demario McGee, 37, faces one count each of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, according to a news release from Jazzlyn Johnson, director of communications for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. He also faces two counts of armed criminal action.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to a residence in the 3800 block of East 62nd Street just after 3 a.m. Sunday on reports of a shooting, department spokesperson Sgt. Phillip DiMartino said in a prior press release.
There, they found Katrice Williams, 32, lying outside a gold Chevrolet Traverse in the residence’s backyard, suffering from gunshot wounds to the neck, according to a probable cause statement in support of McGee’s arrest. She was declared dead at the scene.
The Traverse was still running when investigators arrived, the statement said. The front driver’s side of the vehicle was covered in blood.
The probable cause statement said when officers arrived at the residence, McGee was allegedly in the backyard “acting erratically.” He was taken into custody.
Witnesses told investigators they were in the residence’s basement when they heard three gunshots, the statement said. They went to the backyard, where they said they saw McGee walk away from Williams toward the back of the property.
After the shooting, McGee left the area for a short period of time, according to the probable cause statement. When he came back, he “was erratic and was yelling about how they shot his girl.”
According to witnesses, McGee was known to carry a handgun, the statement said.
In an interview with detectives, McGee said he and Williams went to the residence to record music in the basement recording studio, which witnesses corroborated, according to the probable cause statement. The pair were homeless, he said, and had been sleeping in the Traverse.
Williams stayed in the vehicle while McGee was inside the residence, but he tried to persuade her to go inside, hoping they could sleep inside the house, the statement said.
The pair argued, during which McGee said he “felt emasculated” because of the way Williams was speaking to him, the statement said.
McGee told investigators that Williams said she was going to leave, so he “started shooting in the air to scare her,” the probable cause statement said.
He said that as he raised the gun to shoot it, “the gun might have gone off,” the statement said. McGee reportedly told investigators he ran two or three houses to the east before throwing the gun.
McGee is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash-only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. There are no further court dates set in his case.
