Kansas City man sentenced to 35 years after pleading guilty to sexual abuse

A Jackson County Circuit Court judge sentenced a 37-year-old Kansas City man to 35 years in prison after he was convicted of sexual abuse, the prosecutor’s office said in a news release.

Richard D. Putman pleaded guilty on Feb. 6 to one count each of first-degree sodomy or attempted sodomy and first-degree sexual abuse in the sexual assault of a woman in 2024, according to the release.

His plea came just days before he was to stand trial.

Judge Sarah A. Castle sentenced Putman last week to 25 years on the sodomy charge and 10 years on the sexual abuse charge, with the two sentences to run consecutively, for a total term of 35 years.

“This sentence, one of the longest our office has secured in an adult sex case, is the direct result of exceptional investigative work by Kansas City detectives and the assistant prosecutor on the case who is dedicated to holding dangerous offenders accountable,” Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson said. “We will always fight for survivors and the safety of our entire community.”
