Investigation underway in death of 32-year-old man incarcerated at Lansing prison
A 32-year-old man imprisoned at the Lansing Correctional Facility died Tuesday, according to a news release from the Kansas Department of Corrections.
Raymond Michael Sanders Jr. of Kansas City, Kansas, was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday afternoon. Staff and emergency medical service personnel attempted life-saving measures, but were unable to revive him, according to the release. The cause of his death is pending the results of an autopsy.
The Kansas Department of Corrections and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are investigating his death, which is standard protocol when a person dies while in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
Sanders was serving a 10-month sentence for a parole violation, according to the release. He previously served nearly three years after being convicted in 2021 of four counts of assault on a law enforcement officer in Jefferson County, Kansas.
Court and prison records show that Sanders allegedly violated his parole in November 2024. That same month, the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office charged him with one count of violating the Kansas Offender Registration Act.
He pleaded guilty in March 2025 to attempted violation of the registration act. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison, but granted probation. The sentence was to run concurrently with his parole violation.
