On an early March morning in 2023, Robert Carter was leaving a residence in northeast Kansas City to pick up groceries when he was fatally shot.

Nearly three years later, prosecutors have charged a man for his alleged role in Carter’s death.

Terry Canady, 31, was charged with one count each of second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in Jackson County court on Monday, according to a criminal complaint. He is also charged with three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon.

Kansas City police officers were called to the 3500 block of Roberts Street around 6:30 a.m. on March 31, 2023, according to a probable cause statement in support of Canady’s arrest.

There, officers found Carter, 64, lying in the street with several gunshot wounds, the statement said. He was declared dead at the scene. Nearby, investigators found multiple shell casings, two kitchen knives and a handgun.

A witness told investigators she was cooking in a residence with Carter when he left to pick up ingredients from the store, the statement said. Shortly after Carter left, the woman heard several gunshots. She found Carter on the ground outside, next to a vehicle.

Video footage from the area showed Carter getting into a vehicle when two people approached him, the statement said. One suspect, later identified as Canady, appeared to “make contact” with Carter while the other stood outside the car door holding a firearm.

Carter exited the vehicle and stood next to Canady, the statement said. The video allegedly showed “a flash” between the men before Canady left the scene, during which both suspects exchanged gunfire. A Chevrolet Traverse was seen leaving the area.

Reportedly, Canady later arrived at an area hospital in a Chevrolet Traverse with gunshot wounds, the statement said. There, a woman gave officials several “convoluted” statements, during which she went back and forth on how she knew Canady and how the pair ended up at the hospital. Officers later located a Chevrolet Traverse in her driveway.

In an interview with investigators, Canady reportedly said he met up with a friend to bar hop on the evening of the shooting, the statement said, although the man was unable to tell officers where the pair went. He eventually said he was in “too much pain” to continue speaking.

Detectives collected a DNA sample from Canady, which matched blood found at the scene of the shooting, the statement said.

Officers are still working to identify the second man, said Jazzlyn Johnson, director of communications for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, in a Tuesday press release .

Canady is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $150,000 cash-only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. He is set to appear for a bond review hearing on March 11.
