One person dead following midday shooting in south Kansas City
One man is dead following a shooting in south Kansas City on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to the area of East 70th Street and Cleveland Avenue around 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Capt. Jake Becchina, the department’s media unit commander, said in a press release.
There, officers found a man inside a vehicle stopped in the road, suffering from gunshot wounds, Becchina said. He was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.
Investigators discovered that the man and several others were at a location nearby the intersection, in the area of 71st Street, Becchina said.
The group had an interaction with at least one other person, which escalated into shots being fired, Becchina said. The man and the rest of his group left the scene in a vehicle, where the man was later found by police.
As of Tuesday afternoon, homicide detectives are still canvassing the area and speaking with witnesses, Becchina said. No one is in custody following the incident, and investigators do not have any information regarding a potential suspect.
The shooting marks the city’s 21st homicide of 2026, compared to 24 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
