Two dead, two injured after Kansas City nightclub shooting; No arrests

Two people were killed, and two others injured after a shooting inside a Kansas City nightclub early Sunday morning, according to police.

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were working off duty in the area of 28th Street and Southwest Boulevard around 2 a.m. when they heard gunfire inside a nearby nightclub, later identified as Status Nightclub. At the same time, 911 received calls about a shooting from inside the building, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers were led into the business where they found three women who were shot, and began rendering aid until medics arrived. One woman was declared dead at the scene. The other two were taken to the hospital, where one of them later died, according to Becchina.

A fourth shooting victim, a man, was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle. He is in critical condition, according to Becchina. The third woman who was shot sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Preliminary information indicates the victims were inside Status when there was an interaction with one or more people that escalated and led to shots being fired, according to Becchina.

Later Sunday morning, police tape still surrounded a business on the block marked with the name Blvd Nights, with a nearby flag emblazoned with the name Status Nightclub. Maps of the scene show several clubs also located there on the same block, including Status Nightclub, Blvd Nights, Club Proof KC and The Fantasy Lounge.

At one point, several people showed up outside the scene, appearing upset as they supported a woman wearing a Kansas City Chiefs cap and jersey printed with Travis Kelce’s number.

By mid-morning, an employee with the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office was seen removing the body of at least one of the two people shot and killed, as police started to open up Southwest Boulevard again, removing crime scene tape and cones, and police cars began leaving the scene.

There is no suspect description yet, according to police.

Anyone who was in the area or inside the business and heard or saw anything or has any information is asked to contact homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously through TIPS.

This marks the 16th and 17th homicides this year compared to 21 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
