Employees exchange gunfire at Johnson County nursing home during argument

One person is in custody after two employees exchanged gunfire during a verbal confrontation at a Leawood nursing home early Tuesday, according to a police spokesman.

Officers responded around 3:30 a.m. to reports of an armed disturbance at the Healthcare Resort of Leawood, a senior living facility at 5401 W. 143rd Street, said Capt. Jason Ahring with the Leawood Police Department.

Officers determined that two employees, both men, got into an argument that escalated. One man fired multiple shots; the other man then returned fire, Ahring said.

No one was struck by the gunfire and none of the nursing home’s residents were involved in the incident, Ahring said.

One of the employees remained at the scene and was cooperating with police. The other employee involved fled and Overland Park police found him shortly thereafter. Officers took him into custody without incident. Possible charges were being sent to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office for review.

“It was fortunate no one was hurt during this reckless incident,” Ahring said in a news release.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Police asked anyone with information to contact the Leawood Police Department at 913-663-9309 or via email at tips@leawood.org.
