Man accused of kidnapping told dispatchers ‘someone was trying to kill him’
A Kansas City man accused of kidnapping and assaulting a woman over the weekend allegedly told emergency dispatchers that someone was trying to kill him.
Darrell Worrell, 48, is facing one count each of first-degree assault or attempted assault and first-degree kidnapping, according to a Jackson County charging document. He also faces two counts of armed criminal action.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to a residence in Kansas City around 11 a.m. Jan. 6 after Worrell told dispatchers “someone was trying to kill him, and he had a female inside at knifepoint,” a probable cause statement in support of Worrell’s arrest said.
When officers arrived, they were able to contact Worrell at the front door, the court document said. The man was “pacing back and forth while holding a knife,” with what appeared to be blood on his hands and feet.
Worrell was “immediately” taken into custody, according to the probable cause statement.
Investigators located a woman on a couch in the residence, the court document said. The woman was nude, and had lacerations to her nose and across her body.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where she later told investigators she had tried to leave through the front door when Worrell “started going crazy and fighting her with weapons,” the probable cause statement said. The weapons allegedly included knives and brass knuckles.
In the residence, officers found blood in the kitchen and living room, according to the statement. Two knives with what appeared to be blood on their blades were found in the living room.
At the scene, officers were contacted by a second victim who told officers she had been stabbed by Worrell earlier that morning, the court document said.
The woman told investigators Worrell asked her to buy methamphetamine around 5 a.m., according to the probable cause statement. When she started walking out of the residence, Worrell allegedly stabbed her in the back.
The victim walked across the street, where neighbors treated her injuries, the statement said. She told officers that at the time she didn’t have access to a phone, so she didn’t call 911.
When she saw investigators arresting Worrell later that day, she contacted police to report the earlier incident, according to the probable cause statement.
According to the second victim, Worrell was homeless and had been staying at the same residence as her, the court document said.
During his arrest, Worrell allegedly told officers he was the person who called police, the statement said. He refused to sign a consent to search form for the residence or provide further comment about the incident.
Worrell is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center with no bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. He is also being held on three failure to appear warrants and an additional hold from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.
