A concerned neighbor spotted a man in need of medical attention inside an apartment in Kansas City’s Washington Wheatley neighborhood Tuesday night. The man was pronounced dead, prompting a homicide investigation, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded shortly after 9 p.m. to the apartment building in the 2500 block of Benton Boulevard, where they found the victim unresponsive with unknown injuries, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Emergency medical workers responded and rendered aid before declaring the man deceased.

Police are investigating the man’s death as a homicide. Detectives and crime scene investigators were gathering evidence and looking for witnesses. Detectives will also work with medical examiners to determine how the man died.

The killing is Kansas City’s sixth homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to eleven homicides reported at this time last year.

Detectives urged anyone with information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Tips submitted anonymously to the hotline may be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000.

Tipsters may also call homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043.
