Shooting at KC apartment complex near Swope Park killed 15-year-old boy

Police identified a teenager as the person who was shot and killed at an apartment complex near Swope Park last week.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded around 2:45 p.m. Jan. 8 to the 6600 block of Monroe Ave on a reported shooting. As officers were en route, the department fielded additional calls reporting the sound of gunfire in the area.

When officers arrived to an apartment complex, a group of people led them to a rear parking lot, where a person was lying on the ground. He appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the person dead at the scene. On Wednesday, police identified him as 15-year-old Lucas Long.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the teenager had an interaction with several other people that escalated to gunfire.

Unidentified men allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle after the shooting, police said.

A spokesperson with the Kansas City Police Department said there were no reportable case updates as of Wednesday. It is unclear if detectives have identified suspects.

The police department is seeking information from witnesses. Anyone with information is urged to contact the homicide unit directly at 816-234-5043 or reach the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
