Man shot to death at south KC apartment complex near Swope Park, police say
A man was shot to death at a Kansas City apartment complex just west of Swope Park Thursday, police said.
Officers responded around 2:45 p.m. to the 6600 block of Monroe Ave on a shooting call. As officers were en route, police received several additional calls for the sound of gunfire in the area, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a Kansas City Police spokeswoman.
When officers arrived, a group of people led them to the back of an apartment complex building. There, officers found a man lying in a parking lot unresponsive with what police believed to be gunshot wounds, Gonzalez said.
Paramedics responded to provide emergency medical services, but eventually pronounced the man dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicates that an interaction between the man and several other men escalated to gunfire and the man being struck, Gonzalez said. Unidentified men allegedly left the scene in a vehicle after the shooting.
Police have not yet identified suspects and no one was in custody Thursday.
Police have not yet publicly identified the man who died.
Detectives and crime scene personnel are gathering witness statements and evidence. The killing is being investigated as a homicide, Gonzalez said.
The killing is Kansas City’s 3rd homicide of 2026, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 6 homicides.
