Man dies at hospital after shooting on Kansas City’s East Side
A man is dead after being shot late Sunday in the East Community Team South neighborhood on Kansas City’s East Side, a police spokesman said.
Police officers responded shortly before midnight to the Express Stop 5, a Phillips 66 gas station, to investigate a shooting in the 2900 block of Van Brunt Boulevard, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.
Arriving officers were unable to find a victim, but they found evidence of a possible crime scene. Shortly after midnight, police received a call from a hospital saying that someone had brought a man, later identified as 23-year-old Michael Weintraub, with life-threatening gunshot wounds there, DiMartino said.
Investigators determined that Weintraub had been shot in the 2900 block of Van Brunt.
At about 2 a.m., the hospital notified police that Weintraub died of his injuries. Police are investigating the man’s death as a homicide. Detectives were working to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting, DiMartino said. No suspect information was released.
The killing is Kansas City’s 131st homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That’s down from 141 homicides reported at this time last year.
