Man allegedly fractured woman’s skull during hammer attack at Olathe Whole Foods

A Lenexa man has been charged with aggravated battery after allegedly fracturing an 85-year-old woman’s skull with a hammer in Olathe.

Olathe police officers were dispatched to a Whole Foods in the 14600 block of West 119th Street around 12:30 p.m. Saturday after reports of an armed disturbance with a blunt force object, according to a previous news release from Olathe Police Department Sgt. John Moncayo.

There, officers found an 85-year-old woman lying on the ground with lacerations to her skull, nose and forehead, according to the affidavit. The lacerations were so deep the woman’s nasal bone was visible.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU, according to the affidavit. The woman was diagnosed with “facial fractures.”

A witness told officers that he was leaving a store in the area and was putting bags into his vehicle when he heard a scream, according to the affidavit. When he ran toward the sound, he saw a man, allegedly 50-year-old Christopher Brewer, use a hammer to hit a woman on the head.

The witness reportedly ran toward Brewer and got between him and the woman, according to the affidavit. Other witnesses assisted the man.

Brewer allegedly kept the hammer in his hand until police arrived, according to the affidavit. During a search of Brewer, officers recovered a small bag of marijuana and a pipe.

Brewer faces one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm or disfigurement, according to a Johnson County court document. He is being held in the Johnson County Department of Corrections Adult Residential Center on a $35,000 bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing.

He is set to appear for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 11, according to court documents.
