Park Hill teen was ‘afraid’ of students, brought gun to school: court documents
An 18-year-old student in the Park Hill School District was arrested Friday, accused of bringing a loaded gun to school because he was “afraid” of other students, according to Platte County court documents.
David Peebles is facing one count of unlawful use of a weapon by carrying a loaded weapon into a school, according to a Platte County court document.
Staff at the LEAD Innovation Studio alerted the school’s resource officer at 11 a.m. that they had received a tip that a male student had a firearm on campus, according to a Friday press release from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.
The student, later identified as Peebles, was escorted to the school’s office, where an administrator found a 9 mm handgun wrapped in a T-shirt in Peebles’ backpack, according to a probable cause statement in support of Peebles’ arrest.
The gun’s magazine was loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition, according to the probable cause statement. A round was not chambered in the barrel of the gun.
In an interview with Platte County sheriff’s deputies, Peebles said he brought the gun to school because “he was afraid of other students” and “school shooters,” according to the probable cause statement.
Peebles pleaded not guilty to the charge against him in an initial court appearance Monday, according to a Platte County court document. He is currently being held in the Platte County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing.
He is set to appear for a bond reduction hearing on Tuesday.
