Man tried to contact victim 18 times before fatal KCK shooting: court documents
The Wyandotte County court has released more details of the events leading up to a Nov. 1 shooting that left a 20-year-old woman dead.
Kevin Calamaco-Morales is charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Ana Juarez on Nov. 1.
Officers responded to the 700 block of North 11th Street around 4:30 a.m. Nov. 1 after reports of a shooting, according to a prior news release from the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department.
There, officers located Juarez on the front porch of a residence. She had a single gunshot wound to her lower back, according to an affidavit in support of Calamaco-Morales’ arrest.
Juarez was taken to a hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries, police said. Her 21st birthday would have been Nov. 4.
When they first arrived at the scene, officers overheard a witness say, “It must have been her crazy boyfriend,” referring to Calamaco-Morales, according to the affidavit.
While processing the scene, officers found handgun and rifle rounds, according to the affidavit. Bullets struck the residence, with some entering it. Spent shell casings were also located on the side of the residence.
Juarez’s vehicle was also struck by a bullet and the front driver’s side window was broken, according to the affidavit.
Surveillance footage showed Calamaco-Morales arrive near the scene at approximately 4:19 a.m before firing several rounds, according to the affidavit.
Juarez’s cellphone data showed that Calamaco-Morales had tried to contact her 18 times between 4:21 a.m. and 4:23 a.m., according to the affidavit.
A witness told officers Juarez was sitting on the couch at the residence while her phone was “blowing up,” according to the affidavit. Juarez was declining the calls or texts.
The witness then heard someone outside yelling for Juarez, then heard gunshots, according to the affidavit. The witness started crawling toward the back of the house when they saw Juarez get up and open the front door before yelling out in pain.
Other witnesses told officers they felt the relationship between Juarez and Calamaco-Morales was “toxic,” according to the affidavit. The man reportedly always wanted to know where Juarez was and what she was doing, telling the woman “what she can and can’t do,” witnesses told police.
Calamaco-Morales is set to appear for a hearing Dec. 16, according to a Wyandotte County court document.
