Man accused of killing man in road rage shooting wanted an apology, police say
A 20-year-old Kansas City man is facing murder charges following a road rage shooting in August that left one man dead.
Laken Logan, 20, faces one count each of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, according to a Jackson County charging document. He also faces two counts of armed criminal action.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to Northeast Chouteau Trafficway and Gardner Avenue around 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 on reports of a shooting, according to a probable cause statement in support of Logan’s arrest.
There, officers found Cleveland Wright, 57, on the ground suffering from head trauma, the statement said. Wright was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
At the scene, investigators located Wright’s car, a 2013 gray Honda Civic CRX, halfway on the median on Northeast Chouteau Trafficway, according to the probable cause statement. Five shell casings were located near the vehicle.
Additionally, the back window of the vehicle was shattered, and a bullet was lodged in the passenger side of the back bumper, the statement said.
Officers found what appeared to be a “large amount” of blood in the driver’s seat, with more in the rear seat, according to the probable cause statement. A black handgun was found in the floorboard of the driver’s seat. No shell casings were found in the vehicle.
A witness who was in the car at the time of the shooting, told officers they were completing grocery delivery orders when a small, dark-colored SUV with dark tinted windows and a temporary license plate cut the Honda off at an excessive speed as it was crossing Chouteau Bridge, according to the probable cause statement.
As both cars approached the intersection, the SUV began to speed toward the Honda, the statement said. The witness rolled down her window and she heard the driver yell, “Boy!”
Wright then reached for what the woman thought was a firearm in the car, according to the probable cause statement. Shortly after, she heard several gunshots. The SUV then drove away.
She described the driver of the SUV as a man in his 20s with red hair and a goatee, according to the probable cause statement.
Traffic cameras at the scene showed the two vehicles entering the intersection at 8:19 p.m., with Wright’s vehicle slightly ahead of Logans, the statement said. Multiple flashes were allegedly seen coming from Logan’s vehicle before Wright struck the median.
Cameras also showed Logan cutting off Wright and “allegedly braking in front of him,” according to the probable cause statement.
Officers identified the suspect’s vehicle as a Chevrolet Trax, the statement said. Additionally, Logan, who matches the witnesses’ suspect description, had recently purchased a Chevrolet Trax.
Logan has prior work experience with a business on Northeast Chouteau Trafficway, and data tracking from his car places him on Chouteau Trafficway at the time the incident took place, according to the probable cause statement.
In an interview with officers, Logan allegedly told investigators that after the initial interaction, he decided to “go after” Wright, according to the statement. He allegedly wanted to fight Wright and get an apology from him.
After verbally confronting Wright, Logan told officers he saw Wright raise a handgun, according to the statement. Logan allegedly stepped on his brakes before firing multiple shots towards Wright’s vehicle.
Logan allegedly told officers, “I killed a man that did not deserve it. And neither did I.”
A man in the car with Logan at the time of the shooting allegedly corroborated what happened in the vehicle, according to the probable cause statement. When the man asked Logan why he fired the gun, Logan allegedly responded, “Bro, I don’t know.”
Logan is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $750,000 cash only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. He is to appear for an initial appearance on Oct. 27.
