16-year-old dies after shooting in a south Kansas City park
A teenager is dead after a shooting in Kansas City on Saturday evening.
Police were called just before 5:30 p.m. to the 7100 block of Longview Road near Longview Tract Park on a reported shooting. There, they found 16-year-old Ta’Kori Jones with gunshot wounds, according to Sgt. Philip DiMartino, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
Jones was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he died of his injuries around 9:30 p.m. Detectives are looking through video surveillance and potential witnesses to figure out what led up to the shooting.
A preliminary investigation indicates there was an interaction between multiple people in the park nearby just before shots were fired, hitting Jones, according to DiMartino.
This marks the 122nd homicide in Kansas City this year, the same number of homicides at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes police shootings.
