A Tonganoxie man has been sentenced to time behind bars after being convicted in connection with a 2023 motorcycle pursuit with law enforcement.

Gary L. Dixon, 43, was sentenced Friday to 14 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, according to a news release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Dixon was also sentenced to a total of 14 months in the Leavenworth County Jail for driving while suspended, having no proof of insurance, driving with an open liquor container and not having vehicle registration.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right. Fleeing from law enforcement officers endangers everyone on the road – even on rural roads,” Thompson said in a release. “This case shows that such reckless behavior has real consequences and can lead to a prison sentence.”

On Sept. 30, 2023, a sheriff’s deputy saw a motorcycle without a license plate driving south on 158th Street near Linwood Road, according to the release. The deputy turned on the emergency lights and sirens, but Dixon continued to drive two miles before stopping.

According to court documents, Dixon didn’t have valid registration or insurance, and his license was revoked. They also found a flask with alcohol.

He was convicted on July 14 and will serve the sentences concurrently but consecutively to his sentence for prior charges in Johnson County.
