  • Kansas City faces 90-degree heat during Chiefs' home opener on Sunday afternoon.
  • Rain chances rise Sunday evening as a high-pressure system shifts eastward.
  • Forecasts predict isolated storms through midweek before a Thursday cold front.

The weather might leave people wondering if it’s summer or football season in Kansas City this weekend, as fans get ready for the Chiefs’ home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Temperatures are expected to be unusually hot, and the National Weather Service says there’s a chance storms could roll in Sunday.

The heat will begin building on Thursday as temperatures rise to around 90 degrees, and will persist through at least the middle of next week, the weather service said.

Temperatures will be as much as 15 degrees warmer than Kansas City’s average high of 81 degrees for early September. Temperatures are expected to peak in the mid-90s on Friday and Saturday, forecasters said.

“Most of the forecast area has at least a 10-30 percent chance of seeing highs in excess of 95 degrees on Friday,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion. “These probabilities increase Saturday, particularly in our eastern zones (areas east of Kansas City), where there is a greater than 90% chance for highs exceeding 95 degrees.”

Dew points will be in the low to mid-60s on Friday and the mid-60s on Saturday, which will push the heat index into the upper 90s in some areas. Some areas could have heat index values near 100 degrees on Saturday, the weather service said.

Conditions will continue to be quite warm, with temperatures expected to be in the low 90s Sunday through Thursday.

Those headed to Arrowhead Stadium can expect temperatures to be around 90 degrees at the 3:25 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to soar this week in Kansas City, peaking in the mid-90s on Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will be around 15 degrees above average. Rain chances return Sunday night into Monday morning.

Storms arrive Sunday

An upper high-pressure system that is causing the hot weather is expected to move east away from Kansas City on Sunday. As it shifts, the weather service says this will open the door for showers and storms in the afternoon across eastern Kansas and western Missouri.

The storms are expected to spread east overnight. The best chance of rain for the Kansas City metro will be Sunday evening through Monday morning, the weather service said.

Additional isolated afternoon showers and storms are possible Monday through Wednesday. A cold front is expected to push through the area on Thursday, bringing additional chances for showers and storms, the weather service said.
