Man accused of stabbing at Shawnee restaurant charged with attempted murder
A man accused of stabbing another man at a Shawnee barbecue restaurant Thursday will face an attempted first-degree murder charge, according to a court case filed in Johnson County on Friday.
Maikol Valdes is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $1 million bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing.
The Shawnee Police Department responded to Hayward’s Pit Bar B Que around 1:30 p.m. Thursday after reports of a physical disturbance, according to a Facebook post from the department.
A man, later identified as Valdes, allegedly stabbed another man inside the restaurant and then fled, according to the post. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition.
Just before 3 a.m. Friday, the Shawnee and Lenexa police departments responded to a report of a suspicious person near 79th Street and Quivira Road.
Upon arrival, officers located Valdes, who matched the description of the stabbing suspect. After a short foot chase, Valdes was taken into custody.
Additionally, Valdes has one criminal and one county ordinance violation case pending in Jackson County court.
On July 12, 2024, Valdes was charged with one count each of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in Kansas City, according to a Jackson County court document.
He was set to appear for a pretrial hearing in that case on Oct. 3, according to court documents.
On July 17, 2024, Valdes was charged with one count of assault on a law enforcement officer in Lee’s Summit, according to a Jackson County court document.
Valdes allegedly assaulted a Jackson County Detention Center correctional officer by “striking him in the face numerous times with a closed fist,” according to a citation issued in Jackson County.
A failure to appear warrant was issued for Valdes on April 15, 2025, after he failed to appear in court, according to a Jackson County court document.
