Suspicious death of 7-week-old boy last fall in Kansas City ruled homicide

The suspicious death of a 7-week-old baby at a Kansas City hospital last October has been ruled a homicide, according to police.

Police were called around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 to Children’s Mercy Hospital for an assault that occurred in the 8000 block of NW Milrey Drive. Hospital staff informed officers that baby boy Mateo Rideout was brought into the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according Alayna Gonzalez, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.

A person of interest was taken into custody for further investigation. Rideout died 10 days later as a result of his injuries, according to Gonzalez.

Rideout’s death was initially ruled suspicious until detectives received the official autopsy report from the medical examiner’s office, which they received on June 10, ruling it a homicide, according to Gonzalez.

The case was given to Platte County Prosecutors Office for charging considerations. This case marks the 131st homicide in 2024, bringing the new total count for homicides in Kansas City last year to 148, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
